A friend of mine died in a car accident Saturday night. On Monday, there were a few very brief articles about the accident. The articles did not have very many details because the police were still figuring things out.
I was searching the internet this morning to find out if there were any updates on the accident. I was surprised to find a link to a Craigslist ad referencing the accident. I was curious so I followed the link to the ad.
Some "donkey", decided to make a joke about this tragedy. Their ad was posted under the rants and raves section of Craigslist. (I guess they have that section for people who have nothing better to do than to hate....) The so called ad said this: "Hey Honey, hold my beer while I try this" and then they pasted a copy of the article about the accident. That was it. Their whole ad consisted of what they think is a funny joke about the loss of someone's life.
The article never implied that alcohol was involved. In fact, it has now been determined that an icy patch on the road was the cause of the accident. How someone could read an article about a horrible tragedy and then decide to make a joke of it on the Internet is beyond me. What could possibly be the purpose of doing such a thing?
I decided against adding the link to the Craigslist ad. I wrote this to express my anger at someone's thoughtlessness. I will not further associate the names of the victims from the accident with that vulgar ad. They should be ashamed and so should Craigslist!

Craigslist has an excellent option to flag posts that you feel are inappropriate for the site. And while I believe that the person that made the joke, no matter how distressing it might be, has the right to make his joke. The nice part about the ability to flag posts on Craigslist is that it takes multiple complaints to remove a post automatically. If you flag the message and it doesn't get removed you might want to accept that your opinion on how offensive the joke is, is being biased by your personal connection to the event and is not in step with community that you are participating in.
I do not particpate in that community. I happened upon it as stated in my post when searching for accurate information about the accident.
I do not plan on flagging the post at all, nor am I planning on trying to get it removed. That person is free to make their offensive joke just as I am free to post my outrage about it. I support freedom of speech but I sure wish people would use it more responsibly.
Of course I am biased due to my personal connection. What kind of friend would I be if I read that and was not angered by it? That goes without saying....
Omar, thank you! I encourage you to advertise your real estate properties on Flugpo.com. The free classified ads would be a great way to promote your properties. When you join, be sure to add me to your friend's list :)
I'm with you Kelly. Personally, I could never joke about any tragedy but people amaze me with their lack of discretion and compassion.
Jericho returns: My point exactly. Thank you for your support :)
